Producer / Engineer / Mixer

Digital audio workstation running Cubase

Hi. I'm Leo Brodie. As a music producer, I help songwriters and singers bring their projects to life with top-notch professional recordings. I will work with you to give the song what it needs, from co-writing, arranging, hiring musicians, tracking, to mixing in my state-of-the-art project studio.

I treat every song as a unique work of art. I focus on uncovering the story within a song and making sure that story is told powerfully. I'm most experienced with melodic forms including rock, pop, jazz rock, swing, blues, country, gospel, etc. At the same time, I love to incorporate fresh sonic elements wherever a song calls for it.

Project Studio

As producer, I work in a variety of locations and studios, but I track vocals, guitars and virtual intruments, as well as mix, in my personal project studio.

Microphones

Three microphones serve most of the needs for my personal studio:

Audio-Technica AT4050/CM condenser microphone The AT4050 Large-diaphragm Multi-pattern Condenser Microphone is used mainly for vocals and acoustic guitars, and offers airy uppers/mids complemented by rich low-end qualities.
Rode NT1 condenser microphone, shown with SE Electronics Reflexion Filter PRO The RØDE NT1 large-diaphragm condenser microphone is described as a " modern, vintage-sounding mic; with all the incredible technical specifications – such as low self-noise and high sensitivity – that you would expect from a modern mic" and has been compared to the much spendier Neumann U 89. The NT1 is shown here with the SE Electronics Reflexion Filter PRO to eliminate acoustic reflections) is also used for vocals, acoustic guitars, and other instruments where detail and warm bass reproduction are important.
Shure Beta58A microphone The Shure Beta58A microphone is a supercardioid dynamic vocal microphone with excellent rejection of off–axis sound. In the studio it used to isolate the vocal when the performer is playing an instrument at the same time, as well as for backing vocals.

Recording and Mixing

Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)

On the production side, the digital audio workstation is powered by the lastest version of Cubase (9.5), with a six-channel input (four microphone pre-amps) Steinberg UR44 front end monitored through Yamaha HS8 active nearfield reference speakers.

Acoustic Treatment for Recording and Tracking

The room itself is acoustically treated with Auralex 2'x2'x2" Studiofoam panels on all walls to cut reflections of high frequencies, plus two Primacoustic Nimbus 2' x 4'ceiling cloud panels to reduce lower-frequency reflections and and standing waves.
